Onboarding Coaching – How to Set Up For Success

A good onboarding process provides new hires with a strong support network to help navigate the personal and professional complexities of starting a new role. The majority of corporate onboarding schemes embrace orientation, training, welcoming and networking. It can be easy to pick up new systems and processes but much harder to adapt emotionally especially when moving into a new work style or a new organisational culture with different sets of expectations and measures of success.

At Resourceful Pro, we see onboarding as an extension of the recruitment process.

We take our Search service one step further by providing a personal coach to your new employee for the duration of their resignation and probation period.

Professional coaches have a tremendous effect on an organisation’s ability to not only retain new executives but also set them up for success by shortening start-up times and increasing learning and productivity. This is particularly important within the first 100 days as many studies have shown.

Our programme has been designed by accredited professional coaches using a range of ideas and strategies from different cultures, industries and locations. The coaches we use all act as a confidante and sounding board, providing a balance of support and challenge so the new employee can more effectively learn, develop and adapt to the new situation.

Coaching employees helps them feel connected, engaged and valued at work so why would you not start this process during onboarding?

And with our Executive Search service line, we have embedded coaching into our product meaning all search assignments come with onboarding coaching included free of charge.

Whilst leaders can fail to hit the mark for many reasons, one factor is often overlooked. Many do not get the onboarding support they need to assimilate to the new role. There are many reasons given for the failure of executive appointments (a statistic frequently quoted is 40% don’t work out), we believe that in many cases it is a misalignment between the organisation and executive’s perception and realities of the role. Uniting these two aspects of an organisational role is at the heart of a successful onboarding solution.

In most cases, the employee has been chosen due to the success and capability shown in their prior roles, and all too often, this can lead to the new employer assuming that they won’t need support in the new role. For the new employee, they will often not feel it necessary to broach the subject as they are boosted by the accolades, recognition and new title. This creates a derailing environment which can only sabotage the chance of success.

At Resourceful Pro, we have tried to build a programme that supports executives to transition from consuming value to creating value as quickly as possible.

Some of the other benefits of an Onboarding Coaching Programme are:

  • They provide an opportunity for the organisation to work with the new employee and coach to identify key outcomes for the programme
  • They support an executive through an intense period of their career life with a focus on momentum
  • They equip an executive to navigate whatever personal and professional challenges they face in transitioning into their new role
  • They support a new employee to create a roadmap for long-term success
  • They form part of an originative onboarding programme
